Formaldehyde is used in the manufacture of paints, adhesives, varnishes, and cleaning products, in the textile and leather industry and in many other applications.

In order to limit the levels of this compound inside buildings and vehicles it is important to be able to quantify its presence in a given material.

Owing to its extreme volatility the molecule is detected using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). This technique can also quantify the presence of other aldehydes and ketones.
